Sacred Resonances: Discovering the Two Bell Towers of Sant’Ambrogio
On the occasion of the Week of Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage, an initiative dedicated to promoting the historical, artistic and spiritual value of the Church’s heritage, the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio and its Ambrosius Museum celebrate this year’s theme, “Sacred Resonances,” by unveiling the fascinating history of its two bell towers.
Rooted in the Middle Ages, this story tells of the centuries-long coexistence and heated disputes between the monks and the canons of the Basilica. Through unique historical documents, such as the concession granted by Archbishop Anselm V in 1128, visitors can retrace the origins of the Canons’ Bell Tower, built precisely as a result of conflicts over the use of the older tower.
