GENERAL TOUR

The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio is a place where history, faith and art have been intertwined for sixteen centuries. On this tour, we will discover the most meaningful areas of the Romanesque basilica – from the quadriportico to the presbytery, the apse mosaic and the crypt – following in the footsteps of the first pilgrims who came here to venerate the saint. We will admire up close the golden altar created by Vuolvino, one of the most extraordinary masterpieces of the European Middle Ages, and visit the Sacellum of San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro, where the face of Ambrose still watches over us from an ancient mosaic. The tour ends in the completely renovated Treasure of Ambrosius: works in silver, reliquaries and relics, sculptures and precious artefacts provide insight into the materials, techniques and symbols that have shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of Milan.

THE WORDS OF AMBROSE

The tour offers a synaesthetic exploration of Milan's patron saint through his living words, both written and sung: the Ambrosian rite, which our diocese celebrates daily, reminds us of the extent to which Ambrose was able to enchant troublesome souls, arrogant emperors, obstinate bishops and, last but not least, the citizens of Milan. During the tour, we will see great masterpieces, but even more importantly, we will listen to sung passages and recited words: to remind us that Ambrose was a guide for everyone, strong and uncompromising, but also gentle and benevolent.

AMBROGIO’S ANIMALS

Did you know that inside the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio is a special zoo where animals are free to move around, without being caged or kept in aviaries? These animals are incredible, at times monstrous, at other times benevolent, sometimes docile, and sometimes ferocious. But where are they? How do they spend their days? What fun they must have watching us walk around admiring them in awe! This tour will try to answer all our questions, and give us the chance to see the wonderful creatures of the Basilica up close and understand what they have to tell us.

THE STONES OF AMBROGIO

When we visit the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio for the first time, perhaps what surprises us the most is its simplicity, both in terms of architecture and its construction and decorative materials. But when we look more closely, in addition to the stones and bricks, we see mosaics, silver, and other materials that have been skilfully worked with ancient techniques. Thanks to this tour, we will discover the greatest masterpieces created for the Ambrosian church since its origins, true gifts shaped by the hands of skilled craftsmen.

IN THE MOSAICIST'S WORKSHOP: SECRETS OF THE ART OF MUSES

Golden glints and shimmering reflections guide visitors on this journey of discovery through Milanese mosaic art. Tiny colourful tiles portray the faces of important figures, their stories and fascinating events. Through an explanation of the techniques and materials used, mosaics become the key to understanding not only the beauty of the images, but also methods used by patient artisans to create these incredible works. The tour, which focuses on the apse of the Basilica and the Sacellum of San Vittore, then continues in the workshop, where students can learn more about the work of ancient mosaicists and discover how precise working methods were applied in the workshops of the past, from preparing the supports to composing the tiles. Each participant will then get to experience the fundamental principles of mosaic art first-hand by creating their own small mosaic fragment. This tour is designed to provide a thorough understanding of one of the most fascinating and enduring artistic languages in history through active participation.
