The tour begins with a short film which introduces Ambrose. It continues with a visit to the ancient Oratory of the Passion and its cloister. Groups that have booked a workshop may also use the Teaching Room, a space for educational and creative activities. From the cloister, visitors can access the Atrium of Ansperto and from there, the Basilica.
The Basilica
The Basilica was founded in the 4th century by Saint Ambrose, and is the spiritual and historical heart of the complex. Preserved within it are unique examples of early Christian, Romanesque and medieval art. Inside the Basilica, visitors can admire the Golden Altar, an absolute masterpiece of Carolingian art, the Crypt, which contains the bodies of Ambrose, Protasius and Gervasius, the Ciborium and the Sarcophagus of Stilicho.
The Bell Tower
A space covering the history of the Basilica will soon be open to visitors, who will be able to see its evolution over the centuries through a handmade architectural model of the early Christian and Romanesque stages and a timeline.
