San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro: the chapel of the mosaics and the portrait of Ambrose

Dominated by the figure of the martyr Victor, who shimmers in the mosaic of the dome against a background of gold tiles, the iconographic cycle on the walls shows the bishops Ambrose and Materno in mirror image, flanked by the two pairs of martyrs, Protasius and Gervasius (found by Ambrose in 386) and Nabor and Felix (whose burial Materno honoured at the basilica of the same name, which no longer exists).
